Chamnamul Salad

Notes

20210208, ‘Eojjupjanta is correct, but eojupjanta is wrong’ — that sort of thing. In English, by contrast, ‘yogurt,’ ‘yoghurt,’ and ‘yoghourt’ all coexist without much fuss. If we did away with strict spelling norms, multiple spellings could simply coexist. Seeing ‘Marx’ next to ‘Marks,’ or ‘Dostoevsky’ next to ‘Dostoyevsky,’ we could just shrug and think, ‘oh, I guess it’s spelled that way too.’ It would lower the collective outrage index and build a little more tolerance for diversity. There was once a whole debate over jajangmyeon versus jjajangmyeon. In the end, both were accepted. Romanization makes things even messier. Following government guidelines, Gyeongbokgung Palace is romanized starting with G, not K — spell it with a K and you're in for trouble. In the post-COVID-19 world, there will be plenty more to worry about besides this, but still — chamnamul, chamnamool, whatever... -Finely chop and mash black olives, then add lemon juice, olive oil, salt, and pepper, and let it sit in the fridge for a bit. That's your black olive dressing. -Heat olive oil in a pan and grill the paprika and tomato separately. Season those with salt and pepper too. -Cut the chamnamul (wild chervil) into bite-sized pieces and toss everything together. (Oh — add the chamnamul in last, right before tossing.) *Referenced a recipe from YouTube's Dady's Kitchen.
