I keep Shin Hyung-cheol's book close by and read a little every day. Here's a passage from Park Wan-suh's #thatmanshouse, quoted in it.
'To the young couples sitting pair by pair, wrapped up in each other, it probably wouldn't matter whether some old person walked in or out. Yet I felt my neck go hot with embarrassment, as if they were mocking my own old-fashioned, prudish sense of purity from years ago. The whole world has laid out this mat for them to play on — so where am I supposed to go?
Well then, go ahead and waste your youth. Wasting it while you have plenty isn't a sin, it's a virtue. Holding back and saving it up doesn't mean it'll stay yours forever. That's how I quietly consoled the part of me that felt left out of the young people's world.'
(Shin Hyung-cheol, Sorrow Studying Sorrow)
I had oysters alongside the kimjang kimchi my aunt sent me.
I suspect that after my aunt's and mother's generation, the tradition of making kimjang kimchi will keep visibly fading. I'm regretting having complained to my mom about my aunt sending kimchi without even asking first.
