Bora Kim, the Joy Under the Sun, and House of Hummingbird

20210127 We like to think we run away from pain and sorrow, but more often we're actually running away from beauty and joy — because stress and pain are the more familiar clothes to wear. The older I get, the more I want to grow comfortable with my own ridiculousness. I want to be gentle with myself for knowing nothing, for acting nothing like the 'cool' version of myself I imagine. And I'm learning that nothing truly breaks. Even when someone leaves, even when someone dies, even when a group falls apart, the love, the energy, and the memories we shared stay with us. I reread a piece of writing by her that I'd jotted down somewhere a while back, and set the sentimentality aside for a moment. Her film #HouseOfHummingbird, which I once watched alone in a theater years ago, has just landed on #Netflix. If you haven't seen it yet, I recommend it. I've grown fond of open-faced sandwiches lately — quick, easy, and satisfying without much prep. -Heat olive oil in a pan and toast the bread. -Top with clotted cream, chicory, apple, and Emmental cheese, then finish with honey and walnuts.
