In that sense, the collapse of socialism — which had been in hostile competition with liberal democracy — was nothing less than an event announcing that world history had reached the endpoint of progress.

But watching the U.S. military's withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Taliban's entry into Kabul, and the exodus at the airport, it feels like world history is reversing back to before the collapse of the Soviet Union, or experiencing sheer chaos somewhere around there. I hope everyone stays safe.
