Notes

20251031 #breakfastdiary 1547, 10°C/mostly cloudy About 60% of people around the world use some kind of tool — chopsticks, a spoon, a fork, a knife — when they eat. Meanwhile, the roughly 40% of the world's population with a hand-eating culture, like India and parts of South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia, use their hands as the tool instead. More than you'd think. Anyway, if you trace back the origin of whatever tool people use to eat, it's probably driven more by utility and efficiency than by taste or preference. Cutting food into manageable pieces, sometimes stabbing it, sometimes picking it up — the real goal, one way or another, was simply how efficiently it could be carried to the mouth. (Breakfast-and-me, a cultural history of eating utensils, from Breakfast Every Day) Curry really tastes best eaten by hand. A 631kcal lentil curry flavored with onion and tomato, and naan.

Steps

  1. 01

Soak the lentils in hot water for about 30 minutes.

  2. 02

Chop 1/2 onion and 2 cloves of garlic. Remove the stems from the cherry tomatoes.

  3. 03

Heat olive oil in a pot and sauté the garlic from step 2, then the onion. Add the tomatoes and sauté a bit more.

  4. 04

Pour in 600ml water, and once it boils, add the curry block and simmer for 2-3 minutes, then add the lentils from step 1 and simmer another 2-3 minutes. Turn off the heat, add today's kick — 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar — and mix well.
