A lot of people lament that smartphones are dragging down humanity's average attention span. But the same complaint came up when TV was invented, and again when radio went mainstream. Even more surprising — apparently the same thing was said back when the printing press made books widely available.
Humans are, by nature, creatures who chase freedom and constraint at once, and we don't operate as simply as input in, output out — we're endlessly complicated (and here's where my own conclusion kicks in): so instead of obsessing pointlessly over focus, just look around, and let it flow.
That's the gist of #Netflix #Explained's episode on #thesecrettofocus, which I watched over breakfast.
The reason IBM was the first company in the world to adopt email was to drastically cut the work hours wasted on scattered phone calls and faxes, guaranteeing people time to focus and, in turn, guaranteeing them time for dinner. In today's terms, that's roughly what we'd call #worklifebalance.
