The name fig (無花果, literally 'fruit without flowers') suggests it bears fruit with no flower at all, but really the flower is just hidden inside the fruit, not absent. A fig grows with its flowers blooming inside a fruit-like pouch (the syconium) rather than out in the open, which is probably how it earned the reputation of 'fruiting without flowering.' Those little bumpy grains you see when you slice a fig in half are, in fact, the tiny blossoms that bloomed inside it.
Piled high with fig, baby kale, cheese, jambon, and more, it looks absolutely irresistible — but one bite in, and the precariously stacked toppings come tumbling down, so this is something to absolutely avoid on a first date. Approx 650kcal fig toast
1. Brush the whole wheat campagne with olive oil and toast both sides until crisp.
2. Butter the campagne from step 1, then layer on baby kale (similar texture to arugula), havarti cheese, jambon, and figs in that order, and finish with olive oil, chopped pistachios, and honey in that order.
