Service is supposed to keep improving, but it produces a paradox of its own. Consumers who keep experiencing great service raise their expectations higher and higher, making it harder for companies to satisfy them. It's a bit like how, once you've eaten something delicious enough times, at some point it stops tasting so delicious — or how the more special treatment you get, the more you forget to be grateful for it.
For instance, when American Airlines first introduced its mileage program, every customer was thrilled and thankful. Now, the smallest inconvenience with using those miles draws furious complaints. Today's consumer market is caught in what's called the 'hedonic treadmill' or 'satisfaction treadmill' — the more happiness you feel, the higher the bar rises, until you can no longer feel happy at all.
Maybe that's the same psychology behind customers cheering for the foul-mouthed grandmother at #YokjaengiHalmoni and craving her #SsangyokLatte (the 'double-cursing latte').
Heat olive oil in a pan and sauté the prettiest garlic and onion in the world. Once the garlic turns nicely golden, pour in the boiled pasta and the béchamel sauce made a few days ago. Transfer to a plate, finish with plenty of pepper — thick, rich #creamspaghetti
If the béchamel looks too thick, loosen it with a bit of milk. A morning that taught me what happens if you don't.
