It could be a biological death, or it could be a parting from someone. It was the day a coworker I wasn't especially close to was clearing out their desk after changing jobs. They had a lot of stuff, so I helped carry it, and they said, 'Let's grab coffee sometime.' I couldn't quite bring myself to say it back — it felt too ordinary a thing to say. And that's when I realized we weren't the kind of people who'd actually reach out and meet up separately. But I didn't think the remark was insincere. I think it was the best thing that person could offer in that moment.
It's a cliché, but when you think of it as the best warmth a person can show in that situation, it becomes touching. Even an everyday phrase like that stays with someone's face in your memory — so when I think that the words I say today could become the last words I leave with someone, I find myself not wanting to let a single word go to waste.

A line worth chewing on again: the words I say today could be the last words I leave with someone.
