Notes

20201124, I once jotted down a note about a striking answer the former Seoul Metropolitan Government Chief City Architect gave to the question, “If you had 3 nights and 4 days to show a foreigner around Seoul, what would you show them?” His answer: Seoul's points, lines, and planes. In short — Seoul's points are its great buildings, like Gyeongdong Presbyterian Church; Seoul's lines are cross-sections of the city like #JinyangArcade and #SewoonArcade (and Jongmyo Shrine, which you reach at the end of that line); and Seoul's planes are its landscapes, like Bukhan Mountain and the Seoul City Wall. *This is from Jin Jung-kwon's 'Culture Tearoom,' the episode on architect Seung H-Sang, Part 1, around the 45:30 mark. COVID-19 has crushed the tourism industry, and — like that one airline's ad copy put it — travel has left us, even though it's we who need to leave on a trip. But whenever a time comes when we can travel freely and worry-free again, I'd love to gladly offer a Thai friend Seoul's points, lines, and planes. So today, thinking of a Thai friend who might visit Seoul someday, #ThaiStyleBreakfast #breakfast #tamarindegg -Boil the eggs until soft-boiled and set aside. -Pour oil into a pan and lightly fry the outside of the eggs (ladling the hot oil over them with a spoon). -Dressing: tamarind (1), fish sauce (1), palm sugar (1), water (2). -Top carefully with fried shallots and the prettiest, most fragrant #cilantro in the world, finely chopped.
