Under the Paris Sky, French Toast

20210125 I fell asleep listening to Edith Piaf's 'Sous le ciel de Paris' (Under the Sky of Paris). I thought maybe I'd at least get to travel to Paris in a dream, but apparently my brain's indexing didn't quite make it that far. Apparently it was originally called 'German Toast' in America, but after World War I, as relations with Germany soured, it became 'French Toast' — even though in France itself it's called Pain Perdu ('lost bread'). It's a kind of dessert made by soaking stale bread that's 'lost its texture' in milk, then pan-frying it. -Whisk together milk, heavy cream, oligo syrup, salt, and 1 egg. -Soak slices of bread thoroughly and let them sit for 10 to 20 minutes. -Melt butter in a pan and fry the bread golden brown on both sides.
