Polymaths, Curation, and Buttered Corn

Notes

20201101, somehow, it's already the first day of November. There's a word, "polymath." According to Wikipedia, it means "a person of great talent with broad expertise across many fields — in simple terms, someone who knows a great deal. Nearly all ancient scientists would count as polymaths by today's standards." Leonardo da Vinci — scientist, thinker, and brilliant artist all at once — is a great example. #polymath #polymath Thinking back on the '10,000-hour rule,' becoming an expert in a given field is still admirable, but given that the internet now shares almost all information in real time, and technology keeps pushing back the limits of what humans can do, I find myself thinking you don't necessarily have to be an expert in just one field anymore. This is an age that calls for #curation — an eye for information, the ability to use technology effectively, and an open-minded creativity that cuts across many disciplines. Of course, there's a paradox lurking there too: to gain that kind of ability, don't you still need to put in 10,000 hours in at least one field? Anyway, apparently "Polymath" has been selling quite well as a book lately. Lightly pan-sear the prettiest #corn in the world in butter, then top one half with #fetacheese and the other with #gradapadanocheese, a little #parsley, #paprikapowder, and #pepper — a #breakfast #breakfast #salad that fills the heart right up. #grilledcorn #myfrenchstylesalad
