A subscription economy is one where, for a set fee, a provider periodically delivers whatever product or service the customer wants. For providers, subscriptions mean stable, recurring revenue; for users, it means affordable access to things they need regularly — so there's little reason for either side to object. And given how platforms work, it's only natural for Kakao to expand its business around its subscriber base, so there's no real reason to blame them for that. But Kakao needs to remember just how heavy a responsibility it carries toward its 45 million KakaoTalk users — and their personal data.
