Notes

20211026, #breakfastdiary 250, 6°C/foggy, 25min/exercise Large tomato, cherry tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, pecans, and apple mint with a vinaigrette dressing #tomatomozzarellasalad Every language localizes. Even within a single language, heterogeneity is mixed in. So of course, once a word crosses into another language, there's no way it stays exactly as it started. A word doesn't suffer once it leaves home - it transforms. English becomes Singlish in Singapore, Spanglish in Spain, Franglais in France, Konglish in Korea. The most visible changes are in vocabulary: "handphone," "car center," "morning call," "one shot," "back mirror" (rearview mirror), "remocon" (remote control), "autobike" (motorcycle), "sign" (autograph). Even "skinship" and "fighting," which made it into the Oxford Dictionary, are Konglish. (Kim Jin-hae, With Corona) What was expressed abroad as "live with COVID" settled into Korean as "with corona." The government decided to call it "gradual return to daily life" instead, as much as possible, since "with corona" could give the impression of no longer caring about case numbers and abandoning social distancing altogether. Setting aside the question of localization and Konglish, when you think about how to properly convey a term's actual implication, sometimes it's better not to simply follow the majority. For instance, the "Kim Young-ran Act" only really conveys its meaning when called the "Anti-Graft Act" instead. So personally, I'd rather call it "gradual return to daily life" than "with corona."
