Even within a single language, all kinds of variation get mixed in — so once it crosses into another language, there's no way it stays exactly as it was. Language doesn't just struggle when it leaves home, it changes. English becomes Singlish in Singapore, Spanglish in Spain, Franglais in France, Konglish in Korea. The easiest place to spot it is in the vocabulary: 'handphone, car center, morning call, one-shot, back mirror (rearview mirror), remicon (remote control), autobike (motorcycle), sign (signature).' Even 'skinship' and 'fighting,' which have made it into the Oxford dictionary, are Konglish. Kim Jin-hae, With Corona The phrase used abroad — 'live with covid' and the like — came into Korea and settled as 'with corona.' The government reportedly decided to call it 'gradual return to daily life' instead, wherever possible, since 'with corona' might give the impression of disregarding new confirmed cases and doing away with social distancing altogether. Setting aside the whole localization-versus-Konglish question, when I think about how to properly convey what a term actually implies, sometimes it's better not to simply go with the majority. For instance, the so-called 'Kim Young-ran Act' actually gets its meaning across better when called the 'Anti-Solicitation Act.' So personally, I'd rather say 'gradual return to daily life' than 'with corona.'
